Introduction to Heritage Site

In 1895, Lin Chaodong and his entire family moved to Kulangsu from Wufeng District of Taiwan and bought the mansion. In 1904, Lin Zumi bought the mansion from a Westerner on Kulangsu and settled here, renovating the mansion in the early 1920s. The renovated mansion is named ""Gongbao Mansion"" (for Lin Zumi's grandpa was awarded the title of ""Taizi Taibao""); Lin Zumi then followed Mr. Sun Yat-sen in the revolution and was awarded the title of Major General, so the mansion is also called ""General Mansion"". The mansion covers an area of about 2,000 square meters and consists of a main building and an annex building. Both buildings are colonial-veranda-style buildings constructed in brick and wood. Aligned east-west, the main building looks like the Chinese character ""甲"" with a fence on three sides. The building has a hip roof covered with red flat tiles and is 20.3 meters in breadth, 15.5 meters in depth and 10.15 meters in height. Spacious gardens lie both in the front and back of the main building. The annex building, aligned south-north, has a rectangular plane and a double-pitched roof covered with red flat tiles. The building, with 4 rooms, is 16 meters in breadth and 6.7 meters in depth. Lin Zumi (1878-1925), literary name Zikeng, title Jishang, was a democratic revolutionist of Pinghe County of Fujian Province. Lin Zumi's ancestors moved to Changhua County of Taiwan in 1754 and then moved to Wufeng District in 1762. His grandfather Lin Wencha was provincial commander-in-chief back in the Qing Dynasty and was given the posthumous promotion of Taizi Taibao; his father Lin Chaodong was a patriotic general and was awarded an official cap signifying second-rank and imperial yellow jacket to administrate army of Taiwan for his contributions in resisting French army and expanding Taiwan during the Sino-French War. After the First Sino-Japanese War, Lin Zumi followed his father in moving from Taiwan to the Chinese mainland. In 1913, Lin Zumi took the lead in recovering his Chinese nationality. In 1915, Lin Zumi joined the Kuomintang led by Sun Yat-sen. Late in the same year, Yuan Shikai attempted to stage a coup and proclaim himself the Emperor. Lin Zumi summoned Kuomintang members in Zhangzhou and Quanzhou to organize a secret group in his Kulangsu residence to actively oppose Yuan Shikai. After that, Lin Zumi had been a staunch supporter of Sun Yat-sen and engaged in revolution activities in South Fujian. He was appointed jobs such as General of South Fujian Revolutionary Army, Major General (1918), Shantou Police General (1919) and Equerry of the Generalissimo Mansion (1921). In June 1922, Chen Jiongming revolted and Lin Zumi was arrested; he was then rescued and returned to Fujian. Lin Senzhi, then Governor of Fujian Province, appointed Lin Zumi as Director of the Bureau of Water Resources of Fujian Province. In February 1923, Northern Warlord Sun Chuanfang's army arrived in Fujian. Lin Zumi resigned and returned to Kulangsu. In August 1925, Lin Zumi was arrested and killed by Zhang Yi, Division Head of the original Northern Warlord Li Houji's army, and died at 48.
