Introduction to Heritage Site
Built in 1924, the Meiyuan Garden was purchased by tea businessman Lin Hongde in 1928. As a private residence, it boasts a large floor area and a land area of 3,049.33 square meters, which was quite rare in the area of Neicuoao, Kulangsu. Its architectural style is basically the popular Southeast Asian style with European elements. The porch at the main entrance and the octagon-shaped turrets on the two wings make the building well-proportioned. The two characters "Mei Yuan" carved on the gatehouse look distinctive. The grandiose row building is rare on the Kulangsu. The front elevation is a deviation from the convention with two octagon-shaped turrets, injecting vigor into the building. The walls were built with red bricks and rectangular windows with concrete. The window eaves are triangular. The front gate is set with a rectangular balcony supported by brick columns. The beams of the building are decorated with patterns of Western flowers. The hip roof is covered with red flat tiles.
