Introduction to Heritage Site
Built in the 1920s and 1930s, the Former Residence of Lim Boon Keng is a three-story building with a floor area of 1,069 square meters and a site area of 5,629 square meters. The building lied in the south of Bishan Road according to the terrain and its base was built with granite dress stones and the walls with bricks. The main building is divided into front and back parts and the L-shaped annex building is situated to the west of the main building. There is also an underground damp-proof layer. The facade of the exterior and windows are unique, varied and alternating. The entrance of the main building is above the high platform and the porch is a straight-beam-style entryway supported by two Tuscan order columns and two half-wall columns. Before the gate lie granite-dressed-stone steps extending from the left and right sides with granite-dressed-stone fences. Lim Boon Keng (1869-1957), courtesy name Mengqin, was a native of Haicheng County and was born in Singapore in 1869. He was involved in founding King Edward VII's Hospital Sister Agnes in 1904 and was awarded Honorary Fellowship. He used to represent China attending the ""World Race Congress"" held in London. In 1906, Lim Boon Keng joined the Tongmenghui. He was appointed as Confidential Secretary and physician of Sun Yat-sen in 1912 and was appointed as advisor of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1916. He also managed to introduce Brazilian rubber into Southeast Asia and was called the ""Father of Rubber in Southeast Asia"" by Tan Kah Kee. At the invitation of Tan Kah Kee, Lim Boon Keng was appointed as President of Xiamen University from 1921 to 1937 and lived in this villa building.
