Introduction to Heritage Site
Several British firms entered Amoy shortly after it was opened up as a treaty port. They set up businesses and built warehouse facilities on Kulangsu. Among them, Boyd & Co. was originally a British firm called Syme, Muir & Co. founded in 1846, which was primarily engaged in the trading of tea, silk and coolies, but concurrently acting as insurance agents. Sometime before 1867, it was taken over by T. D. Boyd who renamed the company Boyd & Co.
The firm was located in the Sanqiutian area, which was a centre for foreign firms and warehouses. What remains on this site is the ruins of Boyd &Co’s warehouse, built in the mid-19th century, a relatively smaller one among the many warehouse of the company. A large part of the upper half of the outer brick wall has collapsed. All that remains is the lower half of the outer wall built of granite blocks together with the stone door and windows frames.
The former Kulangsu Municipal Council building to the southwest of this former Boyd & Co. Warehouse was originally the company’s office building. W. S. Orr, the manager of Boyd & Co., was one of the first Council members following the establishment of the Council.
