Introduction to Heritage Site

Located in the east side of Bijia Hill, Yang Family Mansion was built by Filipino Chinese Yang Zhongquan and Yang Zhongyi. In around 1913, they purchased an old house from British Missionary Society, and hired the craftsman "A Jin" to carry out the renovation project. By the 1930s, four western-style houses had been completed. Yang Family Mansion covers a land area of more than 4,100 m2 and a total floor area of 4,560 m2.
Being of Amoy Deco style, each building has veranda with reinforced concrete column-beam structure in the front. All of the buildings have adopted stone wall foundations. The columns, beams, corner pilasters, frames of doors and windows as well as the gate of the courtyard are decorated by granitic plaster (also some terrazzo), presenting collision and contrast in texture and colour with the plain red brick walls. The decoration style mainly follows western Baroque style, while the chapiters feature western classical revival style, and some ornaments are of Art Deco style. The overall layout of the mansion has taken account of the surrounding context such as the terrain and roads, indicating spatial flexibility. The combination of western style pond and Chinese traditional rockery within the garden shows the fusion of western and Chinese cultures.
Yang Family Mansion is a private mansion with garden of overseas Chinese that have been completely preserved in Kulangsu. It is also a representative work of Amoy Deco style buildings created by local overseas Chinese, which has witnessed the home purchasing mode and the lifestyle of local Chinese and overseas Chinese in Kulangsu in the first half of the 20th century.
