Introduction to Heritage Site
The Residence of Missionary of American Reformed Church was built in the late 1860s and is located on the western slope of the Former A.R.C.M. Girls' School. It is also called the Three Gables Salo because it was once the residence for several females: Mai Shuxi, principal of A.R.C.M. Girls' Primary School, K.M. Talmage, principal of Yangyuan Primary School, Fu Yimu, principal of A.R.C.M. Girls' Middle School and Ming Renyi, principal of the Nursing School. Aligned southwest-northeast, the Residence of Missionary of American Reformed Church covers an area of about 570 square meters and its roof is a combination of colonial-veranda-style buildings and roofs of complex buildings in South Fujian. With a special form, the building has eleven main houses in breadth and 9 main houses in depth. The roof adopts the hip-and-gable style of South Fujian. The Residence of Missionary of American Reformed Church witnesses the great contribution that the Talmage family made to culture, education, and women’s liberation in Kulangsu. It is also an example of the cultural collision, where Chinese and Western architectural styles and techniques became integrated on Kulangsu during the second half of the 19th century.
