Introduction to Heritage Site

Kulangsu Blockhouses were built during the War of Liberation (1946-1950) by the National Revolutionary Army to defend Kulangsu. The number of existing blockhouses is over 20, which were all built with reinforced concrete. There are two types: small blockhouses with a cylinder mushroom shape (double layers); main blockhouses with the front part being a cylinder and the rear part resembling an upturned mushroom (double layers). A representative of the former type is one located at the east of the Meihua Coast with a diameter of 4.1 meters, a single gate, and independent or multiple embrasures. Representatives of the latter type include one located at the western end of Gangzaihou and one at the western end of Meihua Coast. The one located at the western end of Gangzaihou is 6 meters long, 5.5 meters in diameter, and 4.3 meters high with trumpet-shaped embrasures and lookouts whose exterior is 1.03 meters long, 0.46 meters high and the interior 0.59 meters long, 0.3 meters high and 0.54 meters thick. One blockhouse at the western end of Meihua Coast has a base with a height between 0.53 and 1 meter. The blockhouse is 6.5 meters long, 3.2 meters wide, 4.5 meters high and 0.48 meters thick. The walls are installed with a gate and trumpet-shaped embrasures. The gate is 1.5 meters high and 0.7 meters wide on average; the interior of the embrasure is 0.26 meters long, 0.17 meters wide, and the interior 0.54 meters long and 0.21 meters wide. The blockhouse contains two layers with the first layer being about 2.1 meters high. These blockhouses are precious heritages that witness the liberation of Xiamen and allow people to acquire military knowledge.
