Introduction to Heritage Site
20 Fuzhou Road used to be the address of Bishan Kindergarten. The two layers of the facade of the red-brick residence are installed with a transverse-beam colonnade acting as the balcony and the main entrance of the first floor is set in the colonnade. The colonnade on the first floor is simple and practical in pillar style. The colonnade on the second floor is beautifully made up of iron carved rails. The delicate house can also be manifested by the decorations on the windows. The artistic window casing in the facade protrudes from the facade of the red-brick walls. The pilaster-style window posts and curved window lintels are carved with patterns. The large louver windows with four openings are very impressive. The window casing in the lateral facade is simple in design and the windows are louvers with double openings. Constructed in brick and wood, the building is a combination of Chinese and Western designs. The red bricks, the grey-plastered cornices and the window casings form strong contrast in color and texture. The colonnades at the entrance of the facade are distinctive and integrate well with the overall landscape in the surroundings of Fuzhou Road, demonstrating the architectural style of integration of Chinese and Western cultures on Kulangsu in the first half of the 20th century and having certain historical value as a cultural relic.
